Pumping Gas

Have you ever been at the pump and wondered about the difference between regular and premium gas? If so, BMW of Turnersville has got some facts for you. We’ve compared premium vs. regular gasoline and we’ve got a fact sheet about their differences and what works for the vehicle you drive through Philadelphia. The service center at BMW of Turnersville is ready to help you master your drive in every sense.

What is Premium Gasoline?

Premium gas and regular gas, to start, are both gasoline. That means they are a crude oil byproduct and combustible, but where they differ is in their octane level. Most premium gasoline will have an octane rating of 90 or above. Premium gasoline also helps to keep your engine cleaner, which leads to less pollution.

What is Regular Unleaded Gasoline?

Regular unleaded gasoline is the most common type, and it works well for most vehicles that you’ll see in Sewell and Williamstown. It’s better for the environment and your health compared to gasoline with lead. Most of the time, it’ll have an octane rating of 87, although there can be differences.

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

These are the factors that separate premium gas vs. regular:

  • Octane rating. The higher the octane level, the less chance there is that your engine will knock, which can damage your vehicle. Also called pre-ignition, this occurrence happens less often when you use premium.
  • Engine suitability. When your compression ratio is lower, you’ll want premium gasoline because regular gas burns faster than premium. Engines that have high compression ratios will benefit from premium gasoline.
  • Price. Premium gas can be as much as 20 to 40 cents more per gallon than regular, which adds up if you’re a frequent driver in Williamstown.
