Paddle Shifting – What Is Paddle Shifting?

Performance-oriented and sporty vehicles typically feature paddle shifters. But before we go over how to use shifting paddles, we’ll touch on what they do. So, what is paddle shifting? Paddle shifters are usually located right behind the steering wheel. They allow you to control the transmission on your Sewell adventures, similar to if you were driving a manual vehicle.

However, the benefit of paddle shifters are that they don’t require you to manually control a clutch, making it much easier to shift gears. Many modern vehicles with paddle shifters also have built-in safety features so you likely won’t damage your engine if you try to shift up or down at the incorrect RPMs.

Paddle Shifting – How To Use Shifting Paddles

If you’re interested in using your paddle shifters on your drives outside of Williamstown, it’s typically a simple process. In most vehicles, you’ll have to enter manual mode by usually pressing a button or shifting the automatic shifter into a certain position. Once you’re in manual mode, you simply use the right paddle to shift into the next gear and the left paddle to shift down.

You’ll want to watch your RPMs as you’re shifting. Of course, you can simply switch back into the regular automatic mode if you’re not sure what to do. The main advantage of paddle shifting is that you likely won’t be able to damage your vehicle by shifting into the wrong gear. This is because your paddle shifter won’t allow for gear changes if you:

  • Downshift while the engine RPMs are too high
  • Upshift when your engine RPMs are too low
  • Press both paddle shifters at the same time
  • Shift into a higher gear while you’re stationary
