How to Return a Leased Car: Step-by-Step

As your lease return starts to draw closer, it’s a good idea to schedule a pre-inspection and prepare for the day of your visit to our lease return center. Once you’re sure that your vehicle is ready to be returned, take the following steps:

  1. Clean out the vehicle’s interior, and collect all items that were included with the lease—including any sets of keys, manuals, or accessories.
  2. Bring the vehicle into our dealership and fill out an odometer statement.
  3. Allow one of our team members to inspect the vehicle for wear and tear. We’ll consider your mileage, your tire treads, your fluid levels, your maintenance records, and the general condition of the vehicle as we make our assessment.
  4. Let us know what next steps you’d like to take! You can start a new lease on the same day or take your next steps at a different time or location.

If you know that you’d like to lease or buy another vehicle on the day when you’re returning a leased car, it’s a good idea to let us know in advance! We can go over your options, help you explore current special offers, and make sure that we have models in stock.

What to Expect from the BMW Lease Return Inspection

The BMW lease return inspection has been designed to ensure that the vehicle is adequately maintained over the course of the lease. If your vehicle has any of issues or damages that are highlighted in the official BMW lease return inspection guidelines, make sure to have them fixed by an authorized service team that uses genuine BMW OEM parts.

The lease inspection will cover each of the following areas:

  • Exterior: Although small dents and scratches that do not damage the paint will not usually result in excess charges, broken exterior parts and collision damage could cost you.
  • Interior: A few scuffs and scrapes are to be expected, but cuts, burns, stains, and hard-to-clean odors are not allowed.
  • Maintenance: You should always schedule maintenance on time and check out any warning lights when they appear—or you’ll risk excess charges when you return the vehicle.
  • Glass & Lamps: The windshield must not have any chips or scratches, and if it needs to be replaced, you should always perform the service with a team who will preserve your BMW features. Your lamps must not allow for any water penetration.
  • Tires & Wheels: Once again, a few scuffs or scratches are fine, but your tires need to have a minimum of 4/32 of an inch of tread depth at the time of your return. If you replace the tires, they need to match the original equipment specification.
  • Original Equipment: All equipment that was offered with the vehicle—including keys and manuals—needs to be included with the vehicle at the time of your lease return. Aftermarket alterations and structural modifications are never permitted in a BMW lease.

Returning a Leased Car with Damage

Returning a leased car with damage is going to make things more difficult for all parties involved. If your vehicle has acquired significant damage while driving through Sewell or Williamstown, you can expect to pay a number of penalties and fees when you get the bill for your lease return. If you can’t afford the penalties, buying out the lease and bringing the model home for good might be a better option.

To avoid the worst outcomes, keep your vehicle in great shape, make sure that you’re covered by insurance, and schedule a pre-inspection well before your lease return date. This inspection can alert you to any damages that may result in fees.

Returning a Leased Car Early

Returning a leased car early does not usually absolve you of your responsibility to pay the remaining balance on your contract. If you’re interested in ending your lease ahead of schedule, finding another driver to take over your lease is probably your best option. They’ll assume the risks and get to drive a like-new model for the remaining time on your contract. You’ll get to move onto something new.
